I bought this book after visiting Monmouth plantation in Natchez, Mississippi, which was formerly owned and operated by John Quitman. It is a beautiful historic destination, and touring those grounds was an excellent preface to this biography/5. It John A. Quitman book makes clear, as May's biography of Quitman states with conviction, that the Civil War was fundamentally about the place of slavery and race relations in the United States.
